Goals of the Season

Today I was suddenly inspired to make a list of at least four things to do before Winter hits, (which is December 21 - I checked.)  And here it is! 4 simple things, not to do with schoolwork or work work or anything anyone else might deem "useful."

Just four simple things to make me happy :)
So you may be thinking, bake a pie from scratch?  Well the truth is out, I have never baked a pie entirely from scratch!  I'm actually rather ashamed to admit it.  And I've never used yeast either.  It has always seemed rather complicated and I have no idea how to use it.  But I'm going to use it and when I use yeast and make a just-from-scratch pie, you have been warned - I will be very excited/proud/exhilarated!

Wearing a dress to class is something I've never actually done.  I don't often wear dresses; in fact I have only recently started to get really into them.  So wearing a dress to class is a little out of my comfort zone, and also probably the only thing on my list I may actually regret. (Unless of course I catch the house on fire - in which case, I may regret those first two.)
And finally, selling something on Etsy!  I'm broke, I need money, I don't have time for a job, and I've always wanted to.
This list now hangs in my room.  Even if I only get one done, I will be blissful!

Just an update

I've not been up to much lately.  In fact I'm pretty sure I could sum up my recent existence in five words:
Study.  Zombies.  Knitting.  Doodles.  Fall.
Let's expand on those, shall we?

Probably the most stressful thing I've been having to do.  I've got one paper, one exam and one test all to study for and that is only Tuesday!

I recently spent a deal of time creating a zombie-tastic birthday surprise for me sister! With zombies now on the brain, I decided to get caught up on the entire series of the Walking Dead.  It was so intense!  I haven't had a good night sleep in a week.  Finn watched it with me and I believe he enjoyed it pretty well.

In my spare time or not so spare time I've been working on my scarf.  I took it with me to my brother's soccer game and made my dad hold my yarn for me while I stood and knitted.  No shame.
I often have a bit of a doodling problem when ever I get a freshly sharpened pencil in my hands.  It's not as bad as it used to be, now that I'm older I have some restraint and can deliver cleaner doodles.
If you haven't gathered how in love I am with autumn, let me reaffirm how excited I am for it.  The leaves, the pie, the chilly weather, it cannot come fast enough!

What does it mean to give?

What does it really mean to give?  The dictionary defines it as to present voluntarily and without expecting compensation; bestow.

But how many times do we give and expect, even demand, something in return?

I know I often expect compensation for my help and it's not till later that I remember myself.  In this world you are encouraged to think selfishly, to put yourself before others.  Jesus tells us that the first shall be last in heaven.  Jesus is the ultimate giver, giving his life for ours.  I think a lot of people just don't understand what giving really means.  It doesn't mean letting a person walk all over you, it simply means putting someone else's needs above your own.
I saw this video the other day and thought it was a wonderful view of what it means to give.  Sevenly is one of my favorite charities and this video they created is simply lovely.

I hope this inspires you like it did me.

Fall project!

I bought some new yarn the other day from GnomeAcres etsy shop.  They have tons of cute hand dyed yarn for sale!  Zombie flannel is the name of my yarn and it intrigued me when I heard it. I love the colors of the yarn and I can't wait to see what it will look like when it's all woven together!

I plan on making a scarf using the garter rib stitch.  I've never finished a scarf, usually I get bored or lose it or it gets messed up and I give up, but hopefully I'll be able to finish this one now that I've told the world.  (You guys have got to keep me accountable!)

Symphony in Yellow

Autumn in one of my favorite times of the year.  Don't believe me?  Just check out my pinterest board I made exclusively for the season.  The leaves change colors, the air gets cooler, (unless you live in Texas like me and have to wait till February for any chilly weather,) and everyone starts decorating for the upcoming holidays and baking yummy autumn treats!  Plus once it starts to get colder (in February) you get to start wearing cozy long sleeves and scarves.  I love scarves.

The only thing I don't appreciate about the start of Fall in the start of classes.  Don't get me wrong, I actually do enjoy college most of the time.  But I hate that feeling of losing my freedom.  You get assignments and deadlines and everything feels so rushed and when that happens I panic.  Fortunately I have Finn to help me with my homework and wake me up at 8 in the morning by biting my toes.

Already it's been such a busy week for me! It's only the second week of classes and I already feel buried with homework. This week has been much better than last week though, except today when I almost missed class because I forgot what time it was at.   I made it though just in time for the roll call.  I was out of breath and in desperate need of some water, but I made it!  So yeah, I'm feeling pretty super about that.
Something else has me in a good mood too!  When I went outside I found some yellow leaves in my driveway and it made my day seeing dead vegetation!  Why?  Because its the start of fall people!
Symphony in Yellow
by Oscar Wilde
An omnibus across the bridge
Crawls like a yellow butterfly,
And, here and there, a passer-by
Shows like a little restless midge.
Big barges full of yellow hay
Are moored against the shadowy wharf,
And, like a yellow silken scarf,
The thick fog hangs along the quay.
The yellow leaves begin to fade
And flutter from the Temple elms,
And at my feet the pale green Thames
Lies like a rod of rippled jade.
I just love that poem :)

Adventures in Baking: Oreo Cheesecake

This Sunday we had a family birthday party for my Mom, sister and cousin.  I usually like to bake the cake for these shindigs, and decorate them myself.  But this weekend I decided to try my hand at cheesecake.  I had never made a cheesecake before so I don't really know why but I just decided I wanted to make one and an Oreo one at that.  So I got on Pinterest as I always do when in search of a recipie and found this little treat.  It was pretty simple to make on my part and I thought it turned out pretty good!
My only concern was that it got a little too brown on one side but everyone said it tasted delicious!
To make this cake I had to go buy a spring board pan from Michael's' craft store.  It was worth it though, I love my new pan and it worked perfectly!

Adventures in Baking: Cinnamon Roll Pancakes

My little brother spent the night at my house the other night.  He was bored and I was feeling creative, plus it was almost 11 o'clock at night, so we decided to make pancakes.  We decided to try this recipe for Cinnamon Roll Pancakes and here is what we ended up with:

So not exactly like the picture on the website.  I don't know if we just didn't do the cinnamon recipe right or maybe it was the fact that we cheated and used Bisquick mix instead of making our pancakes from scratch, (but I mean, come on! It was 11 o'clock at night!)  Still they tasted pretty darn good.  I thought it was a delightful spin on the traditional pancake - even if mine didn't turn out so pretty.  Oh well, maybe next time!
